Why Support Us
Why Support Us
The Hospital receives public funding that provides for the basics of healthcare. But Guelph General Hospital depends on the support of the community, through philanthropy, to do much more than provide the basics. Community support started our hospital in 1875, and continues to be as important today.
Each year the Hospital puts together a comprehensive list of all the equipment required for each and every department. This year alone there are 341 items on the list totaling $8.7 million. Of these, 250 totalling $7.9 million are rated ‘mission critical’. The Hospital simply does not have the funds available to purchase all that is required. The Hospital turns to the Foundation, who turns to the community.
The list ranges from $2,000 pulse oximeters which enable staff to monitor oxygen concentration in patients to an automated medication dispensing system which will cost close to $2 million.
On a typical day at GGH, four babies are born. 120 patients come to be cared for in our Emergency Department. 32 patients are admitted, and 39 have surgery. 120 arrive for ambulatory procedures, and 250 x-rays, ultrasounds and CT scans are performed. Our caregivers depend on the generosity of the community to ensure they have the tools they need to provide care to each and every one of these patients – our family members, friends, neighbours and co-workers.
